Community Forestry Initiative
"Community Forestry Members serve at public agencies and non-profit organizations with a mission to help communities mitigate and prepare for climate change. Community Forestry Members support a range of activities that focus on preserving and increasing tree canopy in urban, suburban, and rural communities. The purpose of the forestry initiative is to preserve one of the community's most valuable natural resource and asset - its municipal forest of trees on public property; including boulevards, parks and other city properties. The City of Lake Crystal's Street and Maintenance Department is responsible for the planting, care and maintenance and removal/replacement of trees on public property; including city boulevards, parks and schools. This is a cooperative effort with homeowners adjacent to boulevard trees, who are encouraged to assist in this care through watering, fertilizing and minor pruning of the smaller trees.
Service could include the following:
- Creating and updating tree inventories
- Implementing tree planting plans and programs
- Designing, constructing, and managing gravel bed nurseries
- Maintaining trees through a variety of practices including pruning, mulching, and watering
- Resident volunteer recruitment & Community outreach and education activities
- Emerald Ash Borer management plan development, citizen volunteer recruitment/training/utilization, and outreach and education events.
